MET-VET – Metacognition for
Environmental Thinking in VET
Project number:
2021-2-PL01-KA220-VET-000050783
For each of the eight metacognitive competences identified (Planning, Reflection, Critical Thinking,
Holistic View, Defining and Solving Problems, Mental Scripting, Active Involvement, Behaviour
Change), the Framework provides:
- Metacognitive Competence Descriptor, explaining what the competence means to allow
users understand the nuances of each competence and how it relates to their context
- Linked GreenComp Competences, an alignment between the metacognitive competence
and the sustainability competences within the GreenComp framework of the European
Commission
- Environmental Thinking Competence Descriptor, summarising a single environmental
thinking competence based on the mapped metacognitive and GreenComp competences
- Examples of Use: practical, relatable examples of the competence being applied in a real-
world scenario
The framework for Metacognitive Environmental Thinking competences defines the key
components needed by VET learners and institutions to effectively integrate an environmental
approach into their contexts.
It constitutes a reference point for learners to understand the core metacognitive competences
needed to develop broad environment focused knowledge, skills and behaviour, regardless of their
specialist industry. It provides an innovative method for VET practitioners to assess and monitor
learners' progress, alongside their core vocational learning objectives and outcomes.
The framework is relevant for both VET learners and VET practitioners and trainers, who through
this document can increase awareness of the necessary competences and the way they can be
developed.
The framework, tying in to existing, relevant broader European competence, environment and
sustainability frameworks, shows where these competences cross over into other skills and
competences and present a framework for the competences to be integrated into existing available
personal and professional development courses, lifelong learning programmes and initiatives.
The framework is designed flexibly to be able to adapt to any VET career a learner may be training
for, and with this sustainability in mind, the framework could be useful and interesting also for
educators from other sectors (schools, universities, adult education/civic society organisations).
“METACOGNITION FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH TO VET” LEARNER AND TRAINER
MOOCs
(Project Result 2)
This Project Result comprises two separate, yet intertwined, Massive Open Online Courses - one for
VET trainers and the other for VET learners.
The differences in the MOOCs are the perspectives provided to each of the different end users,
despite being based on the same overall thematic areas.
The MOOCs, indeed, follow the structure of the Metacognition for Environmental Thinking
Competence Framework (Project Result 1), thus combining metacognitive competences and
environmental GreenComp ones. Each MOOC includes seven Modules that correspond to the
competences listed in the Metacognition for Environmental Thinking Competence Framework. The
structure in modules ensure flexibility, allowing users to focus on modules of most interest and
relevance.
