Environmental Thinking in VET
Project number:
2021-2-PL01-KA220-VET-000050783
Total no. of respondents 8
Profile of the respondents The VET trainers are all experienced professionals with more
than five years of experience in VET training. They work on
Secondary Education Vocational and Technical Schools in
Cyprus and they are all working in the sector of hospitality
both the theoretical and practical sector. The VET trainers
teach subjects like cooking, hotel administration, hospitality,
etc. The VET managers were the principals of two vocational
schools
Methodology adopted Phone interviews
MAIN FINDINGS
All the interviewed gave responses that are very similar in essence. They mentioned that VET
systems are the ones that teach learners the skills of the future which are need for the digital
and green transition to take place, in preparing future members of the labor market to bring
the digital and green transition and the existing members of the labor market to revert to digital
and green solutions via acquiring the relevant skills. All respondents stated that the role of VET
teachers is extremely important in the green and digital transition, since they are the ones who
are leading this process when interacting in learning environments with their students.
All the 5 trainers have responded that they have not attended any training course focused on
the development of green skills as part of their path to become teachers because at the time
these skills were not foreseen as part of their preparation.
However, all the 5 trainers responded that they have attended trainings during their career to
acquire green skills: they attended one off workshops focusing on SDGs in VET training and
general education, offered by the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus. All declared that they found
those workshops very useful, and, since their initial training did not include any training on
green skills, it was an opportunity to learn.
The 3 VET managers answered that they have planned a strategy at their institution for
developing and strengthening the green skills of their teachers and their students. The strategy
involved both trainers and learners and it was focused on developing green skills not only for
training but also in their daily life. They asked trainers to help in informing students about how
to engage in green habits like recycling, using second hand material for their training, etc., with
final feedback very positive. During the workshop the trainers had the chance to ask various
questions, raise their concerns and learn a lot about the need to transition to green skills.
